00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 If you ever got tired of sitting in church and go, we're just looking at one verse today.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:10 ! I want to get into this.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:14 Well, we get our entire book this morning.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:21 And it is not just a lesson of history or a lesson of just trying to understand what it means.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 Today is a moment for meaning.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 Discovering the meaning of Obadiah for those who first heard it,
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 but also for us and what God has to say.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 Because Obadiah is relevant for us in Chatswood in 2026.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:37 Let me pray.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:42 Lord God, would you speak to us these words of judgment and comfort,
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 just like you did at first through Obadiah.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 And by your Holy Spirit, would you cut us to the heart
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 so that we may follow you as your people, saved by grace.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:55 Amen.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:55 Amen.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:00 Donald Glover is a musician.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 And he, one day, was in a music studio.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:05 And he'd been there for weeks.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:07 And he had nothing to show for it.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 He was stuck.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 He had writer's block.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:16 And in a moment of clarity and rejection of his anxieties and his pride,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 he wrote on the walls of probably not his music studio.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:23 So I wonder if it had to get taken down later.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 He literally scrawled on the wall of that studio,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 make the best sandcastle.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 Make the best sandcastle.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:40 If he could agree that his work was just a sandcastle,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:46 here for the moment and then swept away by the tide of time,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:52 then he could let go of his fears over his legacy, over his fame,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 and just make art that he liked.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:03 Seeing that his castle was temporary, his castle, it set him free.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 Ever heard a wise saying that helps you live your life?
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 You might hear it in advertising.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 You might hear it in a movie.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 You might hear it in a random place.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 But when I heard make the best sandcastle,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 I've got to tell you, that really helped me.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 Not only in my creative past life writing music,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 but for every single day,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 because I forget how fragile my existence is,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 how fragile my nature is.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 I spent years trying to build a castle for myself,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 a castle of reputation or a castle for my family
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 or a castle of a place in this world.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 And when I live this way,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 I'm the worst version of myself towards me
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 and the worst version of myself towards those around me.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 We all, in some ways,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 tend to build castles out of our own lives.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:11 They're built from the blueprints of our desires
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 and our understanding.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 They're not visible.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 They're invisible castles.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 They're made of accounts.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 They're made of a title,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 a house,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:24 a spouse,
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 a number and photos of children,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:29 a reputation.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 The pride that we have in our castle
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 shapes the priorities of our daily life,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:38 our character,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 how we treat people.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 We become little kings over our own lives,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 ready to attack anyone coming for our own castle.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 And in Obadiah,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 we see that the strongest castles built by man
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 are just sandcastles.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 before the tide of the sovereign Lord.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 No little kingdom is outside of his rule,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 reach and wrath.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 Obadiah is, in fact,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 a message of comfort,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 comfort to those oppressed
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 by those who are stronger.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 And it is one of judgment
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 against the proud.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 Now,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 you might be thinking,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:29 all right,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 tell me about Obadiah.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 We know almost nothing about him.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 Not only do we know that his name is Obadiah,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 but we also know that the name Obadiah
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 just means servant.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 It's almost a name,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 like if,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:43 for instance,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 I'll take my friend Merle here.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 If Merle was a servant of the time,
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 I'd take her name Merle away
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 and I'd call her an Obadiah
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 or Obadiah.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 So he's completely irrelevant
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 to this message.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 Almost as if the prophet's job
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 is to just be unseen,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:04 translucent,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:08 compared to how important
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 this message is
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 against Edom.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 Edom was a nation
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 that was descended
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 from the elder brother of Jacob,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 Esau.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 Now, Esau was the firstborn
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 to Isaac,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 the son of Abraham.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 Esau despised
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 being the firstborn,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 despised
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 having the birthright,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 which also meant
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 he was the one
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 through whom God's plan
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 would come about.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 And what he did one day
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 when he was so hungry
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 is he traded
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 God's covenant promises
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 and his birthright
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 to his younger brother, Jacob,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 who had been cooking up a stew.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 As Jacob's family grew,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 they became the nation of Israel.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 As Esau's family grew,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 they became the nation of Edom,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 Israel's fierce enemies
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 who lived high in the mountains
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 south of Judah.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 All the way through Obadiah,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 God swaps the names.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 And it might have been dislocating
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 as you were listening
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 to Sarah Regis then.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 God swaps the names out
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 of brother and nation
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 to remind us of this old,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 broken family bond.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 It's really likely
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 that Obadiah prophesied
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 right after
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 when Judah was forcibly
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 exiled,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 defeated,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 and removed
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 from their kingdom
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 by Babylon
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 in 597 BC.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 So,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 we've got 1200 years
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 before then
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 of brotherly hatred.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 And with all of that history
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 hanging over that moment
00:07:06 --> 00:07:06 of destruction,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:08 Edom
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 helped
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 Babylon
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 exile Judah
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 from their land.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 And it's that moment
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 of betrayal
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 that inspires
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 the sovereign Lord
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 to declare the message
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 of Obadiah
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 that Edom
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 is going to be
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 annihilated.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 The message
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 of Obadiah
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 wasn't heard
00:07:29 --> 00:07:29 though
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 by Edom.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 It was for
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 the last Israelites
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 left.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 It was for Judah.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:38 Obadiah
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 was assurance
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 and hope
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 to them
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 that the sovereign Lord
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 judges with power
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 bringing justice
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 and gracious
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 salvation.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 They're the three
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 movements
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 of Obadiah
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 and my three
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 points this morning.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 Today,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 Obadiah calls us
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 to rest
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 with Judah
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 in the hope
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 that God
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 will bring
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 ultimate justice
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 to the oppressed
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 and bring salvation
00:08:07 --> 00:08:07 even
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 for the sinful.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 And while
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 the message
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 of annihilation
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 seems awful
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 to our modern ears,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 there is no denying
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 the need for justice
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 in our world.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:23 But can we hope
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 that God
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 is able
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 to judge
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 and that
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 he can do it
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 fairly?
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 Well,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:31 let's see if he's
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 able to judge
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 powerfully.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 Point one.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 We might expect
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 God's judgment
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 to unfold
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 as if he is
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 a judge
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 over a modern
00:08:44 --> 00:08:44 courtroom.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 I don't know
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 if you've ever
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 seen a TV show
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 of a courtroom
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 scene
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 or been to court,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 been in one
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 of the positions
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 in a courtroom,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 but usually
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 the courtroom
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 begins with
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 reading out
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 of the charges
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 and then some
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 evidence,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 maybe even
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 some discussion
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 or challenging
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 of evidence,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 and then
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 comes the judgment.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 However,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 everything is
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 backwards here
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 in Obadiah.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Obadiah begins
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 with God's
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 already decided
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 verdict
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 over Edom.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 Let's have a look.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 Have a look
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 at verse 2
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 of Obadiah.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 The sovereign
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 Lord,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 who was the one
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 speaking,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 when the quotes
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 start in verse 1,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 go all the way
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 to the end.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 The sovereign
00:09:33 --> 00:09:33 Lord reveals
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 his plans.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 He's first
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 going to make
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 Edom small
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 and utterly
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 despised.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 Edom's highly
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 valued reputation
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 among all
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 the other nations
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 is the first
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 thing to go.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 The second
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 thing Edom
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 valued
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 was their
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 rocky
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 stronghold
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 home on
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 the heights,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 boasting,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 who can bring
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 me down
00:09:57 --> 00:09:57 to the ground
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 in verse 4?
00:10:00 --> 00:10:00 God asks
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 his hearers
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 to imagine
00:10:03 --> 00:10:03 that the highest
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 living animal
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 they know.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 The cliff
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 nesting eagle.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 Edom
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 imagined
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 themselves
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 high up
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 on that
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 ledge,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 beyond the
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 reach of
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 God.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 But Obadiah
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 says in verse 4
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 that not even
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 the stars
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 are beyond
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 the reach
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 for God
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 to bring
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 them down.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 Everyone
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 here this
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 morning should
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 consider
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 how you
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 are clinging
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 to your
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 reputation
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 and your
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 security
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 as your
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 hope
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 for the
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 future.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 But has
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 the pride
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 of your
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 heart
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 deceived you?
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 As it
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 says in
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 verse 3,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 is your
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 mighty tower
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 made of
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 sand before
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 the sovereign
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 Lord?
00:10:53 --> 00:11:00 God compares
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 himself to
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 great pickers
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 and thieves.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 They are those
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 who take
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and steal,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 but they leave
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 behind what
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 they don't
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 need or
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 they don't
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 want.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 However,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 God is
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 coming for
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 Edom's
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 cities,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 verse 3
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 and 4,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 their wisest
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 in verse 8,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 and their
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 mightiest
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 in verse 9,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 leaving Edom
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 walls,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 wisdom,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 and warriorless.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 He's taking
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 everything.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 God will
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 leave nothing
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 behind in
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 Edom after
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 he is
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 finished.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 And perhaps
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 what God
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 says most
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 forcefully,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 we actually
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 miss out in
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 the NIV
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 translation.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 The original
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 Hebrew language
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 is even
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 stronger in
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 verse 7
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 than it
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 appears.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 So,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 have a look
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 on the
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 screen or
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 in your
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 Bible if

00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 have a look
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 at verse
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 7 and
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 see what
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 is different.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 all your
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 allies have
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 driven you
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 to your
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 border.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 Those at
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 peace with
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 you have
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 deceived you.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 They have
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 prevailed
00:12:23 --> 00:12:23 against you.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:24 Those who
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 eat your
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 bread have
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 set a
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 trap beneath
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 you.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 You have
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 no
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 understanding.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 In the
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 original language,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:32 what God is
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 saying is,
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 this prophecy
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 is as good
00:12:37 --> 00:12:37 as already
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 happened.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 as soon
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 as it
