Sermon Snippet
Deuteronomy 4:10 commands Israel to remember the day they gathered at Mount Horeb to hear God’s words,
a sacred precedent.
This establishes that God's revealed words are the ultimate standard of truth, which ties directly into the return of the Lord when Jesus will judge the world by the very words He spoke.
The Connection: God's Word as the Standard
The Command to Remember (Deuteronomy 4:10): God commanded Moses to assemble the people at Mount Sinai (Horeb) so they could directly hear His voice and laws. The purpose was to instill a lifelong reverence for God and to ensure these divine truths would be passed down to future generations.
The Words of Jesus (John 12:48): In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes this exact continuity. He declares that the very words He spoke on behalf of the Father will act as the judge of all who reject them on the last day.
How They Apply to the Return of the Lord and Judgment
The Source of Authority: Just as Moses delivered God's spoken word at Sinai, Jesus delivered God's ultimate truth to humanity. During the return of the Lord, God will not judge humanity based on human opinions, cultural standards, or worldly philosophies, but exclusively by the eternal standard of truth that Jesus revealed.
The Basis of Judgment: According to John 12:48, judgment on the last day is determined by our posture toward the teachings of Jesus. Those who hear His words and accept them find eternal life, while those who reject them have those very same words stand as their judge and condemnation.
The Link to Deuteronomy 4: In both instances, the expectation is the same: God's word is an authoritative revelation of His holiness that requires a response. The reverence Moses taught in Deuteronomy 4:10 foreshadows the ultimate respect, submission, and faith that humanity is called to show to Jesus Christ's teachings today.
